According to a study released by Nature Geoscience, the soil of the natural satellite is rich in water, reports AFP Tuesday, quoted by Agerpres.
"We found the 'water signature' everywhere in the depths of the moon using satellite data," Shuai Li, of the Brown University in Providence, USA, told co-author of the study.
The presence of water on the Moon is no longer the subject of debate today. Already in 2008, researchers have discovered molecules of water inside magma pieces brought to Earth by astronauts from Apollo missions.
"It remains to be seen if these samples reflect the general conditions of the depths of the Moon, or they are rather regions rich in exceptional, abnormal water in a" sec "soil," said Ralph Milliken, also from Brown's University in Providence and co-author Of the study.
Using satellite data, the two researchers have highlighted that volcanic deposits contain exceptionally high amounts of water coming from the depths of the Moon.
According to the study, the deposits contain little water (less than 0.05%), but they are enormous and can reach up to 1,000 km2.
So Earth's satellite would be "surprisingly rich in water," according to the researchers.
