At a recent Biomanufacturing conference, participants agreed that more outsourcing would be seen in the industry. They cited the following trends/stimuli as spurring this activity: greater globalization, increasing complexity of the supply network, emerging markets influence, and cost pressures. More effort is therefore needed between pharma companies and their partners to better manage risk, secure supply, and guarantee product quality.

Since CMOs are now being looked to as key partners, there needs to be more transparency in interactions with pharma. This results in the creation of tools/systems for "on-demand" visibility to enable access to detailed project information, real-time information sharing, and track-and-trace capabilities. This helps foster cross functional and cross company collaboration.
The tools also help optimize communications, manage expectations and provide metrics for evaluating performance.
