The Patent Doc blog today published the list of the FDA approved new drugs from 2013. There were only 27 as compared to 2012's 39 and 2011's 30. This might be viewed as bad news but I think it is more reflective of yearly fluctuation and appproval timing if anything else. If a few late 2012's had slid into early 2013 -- as they could have -- then there would not be much to discuss. I would still look at a 5 yrear or 10 year trend to make any pronouncements about the relative speed things are moving within FDA and drawing any conclusions about the relative efficiency of the drug R&D machine.
