We hear a lot about various companies in the pharma industry who are nearing their own patent cliff -- where some of their highest selling drugs are reachign the end of their patent life and where they don't have a lot new in their pipeline to replace the revenue that will be lost. That's a theme that's been discussed ad nauseum for several year now.
But have you ever thought of a country having a patent cliff? That's something that Ireland may be facing as 5 of the top drugs manufactured in the country are coming off patent altogether or losing protection in the US. See PharmaGossip.
The drugs in question include (drum roll):
- Pfizer's Lipitor & Enbrel
- Takeda's Actos
- Merck's Singulair
- Lilly's Zyprexa
All are about to experience big revenue drops -- CLUNK!
