These sobering pharma industry employment statistics from the PharmaGossip blog using Mathew Herper's blog as the source. It shows that almost 300,000 layoffs occurred industry-wide in the last decade.

The brunt of the damage though has occurred in only the past 3 years with nearly 160,000 layoffs. Clearly, industry restructuring is ongoing. The sales and R&D groups seem to be the predominant groups hit with the cuts. Fortunately, a number of these folks have been redistributed to other companies in the industry but not everyone. And, the final industry structure/model still has to evolve in my view with continued R&D down-sizing still being talked about as well as outsourcing to CROs and the like.
