The relationships are expected to go from discovery all the way through product launch - a period of more than 10 yeras typically. GSK will provide facilities, funding and incentives paid on the treatments success. Under this new model, GSK plans to collaborate with the universities well past discovery stage - thus utilizing any necessary expertise throughout the process and rewarding universities more handsomely for successful projects.
GSK will also cut back on its in-house efforts to help pay for the new model. This will require GSK to invest in fewer fixed assets and the university model offers more flexibility.
