As reported in Stewart Lyman's column in Xconomy, the IRS Biotech Grants (or credits) were announced today on the IRS website. All $1 B that was allocated to the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Program was awarded. Approximately 2400 different companies received awards in 47 states (nothing for Alaska, Idaho and Wyoming) and the mean award was approximately $410,000.
From a purely parochial point of view, as someone who works in a company with primary sites (at least for me) in St. Louis, Milwaukee and Lenexa, I wanted to see what awards were given in Missouri, Wisconsin and Kansas -- and also compare to biotech powers California and Massachuesetts. The results:
- Kansas Grants = $4,031,255
- Missouri Grants = $7,721,475
- Wisconsin Grants = $13,054,120
- Massachuesetts Grants = $125,965,736
- California Grants = $278,089,566
It looks like KS, MO and WI may have a little ways to go to catch up! But at least they are somebody and still beat out AK, ID, and WY.
