The CBO says use of generic drugs has saved Medicare Part D $33 B in 2007. The trade group Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA)in quoting the report says that another $14 B in savings is expected in 2012 when another round of generics enter the market.

"Tools pioneered by pharmacy benefit managers, including encouraging the use of generic medications, have lowered costs and expanded access to prescription drugs for seniors in Medicare Part D" said the PCMA.
