For those of you who have read this blog regarding the India-EU trade dispute, the Other Shoe has finally dropped. India and Brazil have filed a complaint with the WTO over the seizure of generic drug shipments from India to Brazil.
India, Brazil Launch Trade Dispute Against EU, Netherlands Over Seizures Of Generic Drugs - Kaiser Global Health.
Both countries claim the drugs involved were not covered by any patents in the importing or exporting country. What's more, they claim the EU is trying to disrupt supply of needed drugs to poor developing countries -- and not for the first time. They claim it is a concerted effort.
Brazil and India also believe that due to this policy of seizures, exporting countries have avoided transit through the EU leading to higher shipping costs to these poor nations - contrary to their needs.
The WTO will now have 60 days to try to come up with a fair resolution.
